Chiefs Falter at Home, Game 4 Tomorrow
April 3, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - Spokane faced off against Prince George in Game 3 of the Western Conference Playoffs First Round on Tuesday night, in their first home game since March 17th. The Cougars opened up the series with a pair of wins in B.C. with the Chiefs looking to bounce back on home ice. Kaden Allan, 24th overall selection in the '23 WHL Draft, made his home WHL debut on defense for the Chiefs.
The game opened with a competitive first period featuring crisp passing and heavy hitting. Spokane was first on the board with Hayden Paupanekis' second of the series at the 12:30 mark.
The rookie took the puck out of the air and knocked it in with the lone assist going to Cam Parr.
Prince George would even up the score exactly 5 minutes later with a power play goal off a faceoff from Zac Funk, his first of the playoffs.
Borya Valis added a second for the Cougars in the second period followed up by another power play goal from Hudson Thornton, making it 3-1 in favor of Prince George at 13:06.
Funk scored his second goal and fourth point of the night at 5:59 of the third, building the lead to 4-1.
Spokane responded shortly after to cut the deficit back to two. It was the youngster Owen Martin dancing down the right wing and evading the defender before sliding it net front for the chip in from Chiefs' veteran Ty Cheveldayoff.
Spokane would pour on the pressure late to no avail as the game finished 4-2. Special teams was a key factor as Prince George scored twice on the man advantage with Spokane going 0-5 on the power play.
Michaluk made several outstanding stops on the way to a 29-save night in net for Spokane.
The Chiefs will look to keep the series alive tomorrow night right back here at the Spokane Arena. Game four will have a special puck drop time of 6:30 PM. Doors will open at 5:30 PM. Visit SpokaneChiefs.com/Playoffs to secure your tickets now.
