Saskatoon Blades News Release

Saskatoon, SK - Saskatoon Blades head coach Brennan Sonne has been named the East Division finalist for WHL Coach of the Year. The league announced all four division nominees Wednesday afternoon.

Sonne won the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy last year for the league's top coach after a 48-15-4-1 campaign and an Eastern Conference Final appearance. The Maple Ridge, BC native's third year behind the bench in Saskatoon was his most successful yet. Sonne led the Blades to a 50-13-2-3 record, the first time the Blades reached 50 wins since the 2010-11 campaign. Saskatoon was the only team to crack 50 wins this season, earning their fifth Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy in franchise history, awarded to the top team in the WHL. The Blades also clinched their 11th East Division banner in 60 years of the franchise.

Loaded with lethal offensive weapons throughout the lineup, Sonne got his club to buy in once again to a structured defensive game. The Blades allowed the fewest goals in the WHL (163) and were the least penalized team with 614 penalty minutes. In three year's with the Blades, Sonne owns a 131-54-14 record.
