Chiefs Fall To Devils

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Trenton, Nj. - The Johnstown Chiefs were dealt a 5-2 setback by the Trenton Devils on Wednesday night at the Sovereign Bank Arena.

Johnstown saw its record dip to 0-2-0 to start the season.

The Chiefs finished the first period with a flurry of scoring opportunities, but it was in an effort to erase a Trenton lead instead of build one of their own. Goals 1:57 apart by Jeff Prough and Kory Nagy put the Devils ahead 2-0. Prough backhanded a rebound through Kris Mayotte's five-hole at 5:03, and Nagy finished off a cycle with a one-timer from the left wing at 7:00

Johnstown's momentum from the end of the third period didn't quite carry over to the second as the Devils used another flurry to double their lead. Nagy beat Mayotte with a wrist shot from the low left wing at 3:07 of the second for a 3-0 Trenton lead. Scott Bartlett was up next as he took a centering pass in the low slot and fired a one-timer just past Mayotte's outstretched left pad. The Devils' fourth goal chased Mayotte from the net and brought Shane Connelly into the game for his professional debut. The rookie out of the University of Wisconsin kept Trenton off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the period and allowed the Chiefs to chip away at the lead. Matt Robinson lifted a rebound top shelf for his first of the season at 11:06. Ryan Del Monte and Ryan Menei provided the assists.

Jeremy Akeson would score his first of the season in the third period to give Trenton back its four-goal lead. The second-year pro gathered a loose puck after Andy Thomas' failed coast-to-coast rush attempt and slid it past the prone Connelly. The Chiefs still refused to quit as Mike Knight put a rebound past Caruso on the power play at 14:29 of the third. Mike Bartlett and Troy Schwab each picked up assists for their first pro points.

Johnstown finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. Mayotte sustained the loss with 16 saves on 20 shots in 24:19 of work.
