Spokane Chiefs News Release
Victoria, B.C. - The Spokane Chiefs will head into the mid-season holiday break in a jolly mood after a 3-1 victory at Victoria on Wednesday night, scoring all three goals during the second period.
After a scoreless first, the Chiefs broke through on a power play seven minutes into the middle frame as Leif Mattson scored for the second-straight night. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Filip Kral rang one off the iron and Mattson batted the rebound out of mid-air to make it 1-0. Forward Eli Zummack extended his point streak to a team-best 10 games with the secondary assist while Kral's helper put him past the 100 career points milestone.
The Royals responded with a power play goal of their own by Kaid Oliver to tie it up but it wasn't long before Adam Beckman continued his red-hot December to regain the lead, again on the man advantage for Spokane. The Minnesota Wild prospect one-timed it from the right circle to extend his goal streak to six games.
Top 2020 NHL Entry Draft prospect Jack Finley pushed the Chiefs' lead to two with 2:04 left in the stanza, tapping in an easy one on the weak side after a perfect cross-ice feed from Michael King. Spokane headed into the second intermission up 3-1.
Spokane held on for their 19th win of the season and ninth on the road, killing off a late Victoria power play to secure the two points.
Campbell Arnold earned the start in goal for Spokane -- his fourth start in five nights -- and was outstanding, turning aside 24 of 25 shots faced including all 10 during the third period. Shane Farkas started for Victoria and stopped 27 as the Chiefs outshot Victoria 30-25. Spokane finished 2-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Chiefs are now 7-1-0-1 over their last nine games.
