Charlotte, NC--The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, scored 11 times in the final six innings to douse the Charlotte Knights 11-6 Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. Steven Souza Jr. went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs in the victory.
Syracuse (56-37) took the lead for good in the decisive sixth inning. Souza Jr. led off with a double to left off of Charlotte (38-57) starter Shawn Hill. The next batter, Tyler Moore, socked a two-run home run down the left-field line to hand Syracuse a 4-3 lead. Three batters later, Destin Hood smashed his sixth homer of the year. That solo shot gave the Chiefs a 5-3 edge.
In the seventh, Souza Jr. struck again. After Emmanuel Burriss reached first on a hit by pitch, Jeff Kobernus sacrifice bunted to move Burriss to second. Next, Souza Jr. rocked a double down the left-field line and the Chiefs led 6-3.
In the eighth, Syracuse struck for two more. With one out, Hood walked and stole second. Brandon Laird followed with an RBI single and made the score 7-3. Two batters later, Burriss singed a double to right which Knights outfielder Blake Tekotte bobbled. That error--Tekotte's second of three in the game--made the score 8-3 as Laird scored.
Charlotte retaliated in the home half of the inning against Syracuse reliever Xavier Cedeno. Josh Phegley and Matt Davidson singled with a Jordan Danks strikeout in between. After Andy Wilkins struck out, Matt Tuiasosopo slammed a three-run homer to left and cut the lead to two at 8-6.
The Chiefs, though, finished the victory with a three-run ninth inning off of former teammate Henry Rodriguez. The first seven batters reached in the inning with four walks and three hits. In the inning, Greg Dobbs punched an RBI single to left, Tyler Moore scored on Tekotte's third error and Sandy Leon walked with the bases loaded.
Syracuse starter Blake Treinen moved his record to 5-0 with the victory. He tossed five innings of three-run ball in the victory. Middle-reliever Matt Grace retired all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh. That stint extended his scoreless streak (dating back to Double-A Harrisburg) to 22 innings and a third.
Souza Jr.'s four hits pushed his league-leading average to .374 for the season. Four of the nine Syracuse starters--Burriss, Souza Jr., Moore and Laird--had at least two hits. With the victory, the Chiefs advanced their lead in the North Division to four-and-a-half games.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 Friday night in Charlotte as International League All-Star Aaron Laffey is scheduled to face Charlotte's Deunte Heath.
