Charlotte Knights News Release
(Uptown Charlotte, NC) - Charlotte Knights catcher Josh Phegley, who is leading all International League catchers with 13 home runs this season, has been named to the 2014 International League All-Star Team today. He joins teammate Tyler Saladino, who was elected to start at shortstop for the IL squad. Both will represent Charlotte at the 2014 Cree Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 16 in Durham, NC.
Phegley, a native of Terre Haute, IN, has been selected to the IL All-Star Team for the third time in his career. He played in the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game in Buffalo, NY and was selected in 2013 but didn't play due to a promotion to Chicago. This season, Phegley replaces catchers Christian Vazquez (Pawtucket) and Roberto Perez (Columbus) who were both selected to the game but will not play. Both catchers have been promoted to the majors.
A member of Chicago's 40-man roster, Phegley is hitting .253 with 42 runs scored, 20 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, and 38 RBIs over 70 games with Charlotte this season. The 26-year-old backstop leads all IL catchers in a number of defensive categories. Currently, he is first in games caught (69), total chances (641), putouts (578), and assists (57). He has also thrown out a league-best 46% of attempted basestealers. A defensive star behind the plate, Phegley won the MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2012 with the Knights.
Originally drafted by the White Sox in the 2009 draft, Phegley made his Major League debut last season with Chicago (July 5) against the Tampa Bay Rays. Two days later, the Indiana University product hit his first career Major League home run. He hit three home runs over his first five Major League games - joining Magglio Ordonez and Zeke Bonura as the only players in White Sox franchise history to hit three home runs over their first five games.
Saladino is currently hitting a team-high .312 on the season over 80 games. The San Diego, CA native is seventh in the IL in batting average and has 40 runs scored, 16 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, and 42 RBIs.
The Knights return home to BB&T Ballpark tonight to open a four-game series with the Syracuse Chiefs (Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals). Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and tonight is Italian Heritage Night and Thirsty Thursday (tm) presented by Hickory Tavern. First pitch of tonight's opener is set for 7:05 p.m.
