Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings entered Thursday's twinbill having lost just two of their first 12 doubleheader games all season.
But the Scranton/WB RailRiders doubled that number with a pair of walk-off wins Thursday night as the Red Wings were swept in a doubleheader for the first time all season, losing the opener 5-4, before falling in the night cap 1-0 at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.
The walk-offs could not have been any different.
In Game One, with runners on first and third and one out, Kyle Roller hit a 60-foot chopper up the first base line against Ryan Pressly that easily scored Adonis Garcia from third for a walk-off fielder's choice.
In the night cap, Garcia torched a 2-1 offering from A.J. Achter over the left field fence to lead off the home half of the seventh to complete the sweep. It was the first walk-off home run against the Red Wings since April 14, 2013 when Mitch Maier of Pawtucket hit a home run in the bottom of the 11th.
The Wings have now lost four games this season in walk-off fashion. Prior to tonight, their previous walk-off defeat was loss number eight of their Ohio road trip back on May 12 at Toledo.
Trailing 4-2 in the opener, the Wings offense battled back to tie the game in the top of the seventh courtesy of one-out RBI singles from Doug Bernier and James Beresford . However, Scranton answered right back in the bottom half of the inning taking advantage of a lead off walk to Garcia issued by Wings reliever Lester Oliveros .
Garcia moved to second on a sac bunt from Austin Romine and advanced to third on a J.R. Murphy single to set the stage for Roller's roller up the first base line that first baseman Nate Hanson had no play on.
In Game Two, Rochester scattered just five singles as their streak of 51 consecutive games with an extra-base hit was snapped.
Deolis Guerra was the spot starter in the night cap - his first start since the 2011 season with New Britain. He tossed three scoreless innings before giving way to Achter who followed with three more scoreless frames before yielding the homer to Garcia to begin his fourth inning of work.
The Red Wings wrap up their three-game, two-day series in Scranton on Friday night with a 7:05 first pitch from PNC Field. Right-hander Mark Hamburger will make his second start for the Red Wings as they look to avoid the three-game sweep.
