Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA- The Peoria Chiefs gave up double digits in runs for the fifth time in August and allowed the Cedar Rapids Kernels back into the Wild Card race with an 11-1 defeat Thursday night. The loss drops the Wild Card leading Chiefs to 30-22 on the half and 61-60 overall.
The Chiefs came out swinging against the MWL's ERA leader Sean O'Sullivan. With one out, Darwin Barney singled to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jim Adduci's bid for a RBI double was thwarted on a diving effort in left by Tyler Johnson for the second out. Blake Lalli was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs. Newcomer Ty Wright came through in his first Chiefs at-bat with a RBI single to center as Barney scored without a throw for a 1-0 Peoria lead. O'Sullivan then got Russ Canzler to bounce into a fielders' choice to end the inning.
The Chiefs led 1-0 into the second when Cedar Rapids got to Peoria starter Jake Renshaw. A single and hit batter put two on with two outs and Anderson Rosario tied the game with a RBI single to left. PJ Phillips followed with his second hit of the game for a 2-1 Kernels lead before Renshaw pitched out of the inning.
The Kernels extended their lead and ended Renshaw's night in the third inning. After a leadoff single and walk, Wil Ortiz was caught stealing third. The Chiefs intentionally walked Matt Sweeney and Johnson made them pay with a RBI single to center. Leon Johnson's throw to third hit Sweeney and went into foul territory as the Kernels added another run. Casey Lambert relieved Renshaw and gave up a RBI single to Ryan Mount for a 5-1 Kernels lead.
Cedar Rapids put the game away against Lambert in the fourth inning. Rosario led off with an infield single and moved to second on an error by Marquez Smith. Phillips reached on a bunt single and with one out, Ortiz drove home Rosario. After a double steal, Mark Trumbo made it 7-1 with a basehit to left. Sweeney reached on another Chiefs error as Ortiz scored to give Cedar Rapids an 8-1 lead before Lambert secured the final two outs.
With the score still 8-1 in the seventh, the Kernels added more against Chiefs reliever Chris Siegfried. Sweeney was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on a double by Johnson that was misplayed in rightfield. After a strikeout, pinch-hitter Cody Collet doubled down the first base line for his first hit and RBI of the season. Siegfried got a strikeout to end the inning with the Chiefs trailing 10-1. Renshaw (12-8) went a season low 2 1/3 innings and remains tied for the MWL lead with 12 wins. The right-hander allowed four earned runs and seven hits while walking two. Lambert allowed five hits and three runs in 1 2/3 innings. Matt Maradeo pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Siegfried allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of work while striking out three.
Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Matt Maradeo (RHP) - The Chiefs side-arming righty was the only pitcher not to allow a run in the game. He retired all six batters he faced with four strikeouts.
