COMSTOCK PARK - Jeramy Laster went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI while the Whitecaps pitching staff held South Bend to two hits in a 11-2 trouncing of the Silver Hawks. Duane Below allowed just one hit in six shutout innings of work to earn his eleventh victory of the season.
Laster singled three times, walked once then hit a two run homer to left in the eighth to cap the Whitecaps scoring. The designated hitter also scored three times.
Below issued four walks but struck out seven. He was relieved by Zach Piccola who gave up two unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Tyler Jones drove in a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Joey Side followed with a bases loaded walk to drive in the second run and bring the tying run to the plate.
Luis Marte then retired seven of the last eight Silver Hawk batters in the game to earn his first save as a Whitecap.
Yunesky Sanchez, who batted ninth in the South Bend lineup had both the Silver Hawk hits: a on e out double in the third and a two out single in the ninth.
Gorkys Hernandez went 4-for-5 for West Michigan with a double, triple, three runs scored and his Midwest League leading 49th stolen base of the season.
Scott Sizemore also went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Ryan Strieby and Brandon Timm each doubled and drove in a pair for West Michigan.
The Other Half: The end of the two game homestand for the Whitecaps is Friday against South Bend. LHP Eddie Romero (7-5, 4.07) will be on the mound for the Silver Hawks against RHP Lauren Gagnier (5-11, 4.76) for West Michigan.
