Chiefs Add Concepcion, Cabezas in Roster Moves

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that Cuban-born lefty Geraldo Concepcion and catcher Yaniel Cabezas have been added to the Chiefs 25-man roster. To make room, reliever Scott Weismann has been promoted to Double-A Tennessee and catcher Rafael Lopez has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with a right eye infection.

Concepcion will make his professional debut as the Chiefs starting pitcher Wednesday night when Peoria takes on the Lake County Captains at 5:30 p.m. CDT in Lake County. The 20-year old signed with the Cubs on March 11 and was added to the 40-man roster with a five-year major league deal. Listed at 6'1 and 185 pounds, Concepcion was Cuban National Series Rookie of the Year last season going 10-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 21 games and 16 starts for the Industriales. He was sixth in the league in wins, second in win percentage and ninth in ERA. The previous season he pitched for Havana in the Cuban Junior National Tournament and was 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 15 games, six as a starter. He struck out 39 and walked 15 in 47 innings of work with no home runs allowed..

Cabezas, 23, hit .202 last year split between Mesa in Boise in his first professional season. He played in just three games for Mesa going 2-for-9 with a RBI and two walks. In 47 games for Boise he hit .201 with a home run, seven doubles and 17 RBI. A native of La Habana, Cuba, Cabezas currently resides in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic in the offseason. He joins the Chiefs roster from Extended Spring Training in Mesa.

Weismann made his professional debut with the Chiefs on April 5 at Beloit and was 0-0 with a 3.52 ERA in five outings this season. The right struck out seven and did not issue a walk in 7 2/3 innings of work. He joins the Double-A Tennessee Smokies.

Lopez, who hasn't played since Saturday, hit .283 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI in 12 games behind the plate for the Chiefs so far this season. He has also stolen a base and scored four runs. Lopez, 24, suffered a right eye infection over the weekend that lands him on the disabled list.

The Chiefs, 7-10 before Tuesday's 11:00 a.m. game, head out on a season long 13-game, 14-day roadtrip which starts Wednesday. The Chiefs will play three games in Eastlake, Ohio against the Lake County Captains before starting a three-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps Saturday in Indiana. After a May 1 offday the Chiefs head north to play three games against the Kane County Cougars in Geneva, Illinois. The road-trip ends with a four-game commuter series in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River Bandits. The 14-day trip will cover more than 2000 miles with games in four states. After Tuesday the Chiefs are next at home on Wednesday, May 9 when they host the Beloit Snappers at 6:30 p.m. with $1 hot dogs, $1 ice cream sandwiches and $1 fountain sodas.
