
Kernels rally but fall to Dayton, 3-2

Dayton, Ohio - The Kernels scored a run in the ninth inning to rally, but Dayton edged the Kernels 3-2 on Tuesday evening in the final game of the Kernels nine game road trip.
The Kernels trailed the Dragons 3-1 entering the ninth inning. Ryan Jones led off with a triple to extend his hit streak to seven games. Kaleb Cowart followed with a RBI double down the left field line to score Jones and cut the Dragons lead to 3-2. Cowart advanced to third base on Frazier Hall's groundout to third base. Gary Mitchell's walk put runners at the corners with one out. Chevy Clarke then struck out, and Trevor Hairgrove grounded to short to force out Mitchell and end the game.
Dayton took the first lead of the game with a single run in the fourth inning. Kyle Waldrop's RBI single scored Robert Maddox, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Jairo Diaz started for the Kernels and went four innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two.
The Kernels tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning. Chevy Clarke doubled to lead off the inning and later came home on a RBI groundout by Abel Baker. The Dragons took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Theo Bowe led off with a walk, stole second base, went to third base on a fly ball to right, and came home on a RBI single down the line in right by Ryan Wright.
Mike Johnson (0-3) pitched the sixth inning and took the loss for the Kernels, allowing one run on one hit while walking one. Ty Kelley pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit while striking out three and walking none.
Dayton added a run in the eighth inning to push their lead to 3-1. Wright tripled with one out and scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center by Danny Vicioso. Stephen Tromblee pitched one inning for the Kernels and allowed one run on one hit while walking one. Tanner Robles (2-0) got the win in six innings of work for Dayton. He allowed one run and struck out four and walked one. Carlos Contreras recorded his second save as he retired the final two Kernels hitters.
The Kernels have an off day on Wednesday. They will be back in action on Thursday evening at Perfect Game Field. Game time is 6:35 p.m. vs. the South Bend Silver Hawks, the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Come celebrate the birthday of Mr. Shucks!
