Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth capped off by a Paul Hoilman walk0ff grand slam to beat the Lansing Lugnuts 6-2 in the finale of a nine-game homestand. The Chiefs now head to Lake County to start a 13-game roadtrip with an 8-11 record.
The game was a pitchers' duel through eight innings as Kyler Burke and Ben Wells for the Chiefs and three Lugnuts kept the game scoreless. The Chiefs left two runners on in three different innings and Lansing didn't get a runner past second base in the first eight innings.
Lansing got on the board in the top of the ninth against Wells. Kevin Pillar singled and came around to score when Pin-Chieh Chen bobbled a double from KC Hobson. With two down, Andy Burns singled to right to score Pierce Rankin for a 2-0 Lansing lead.
In his first Peoria game, Yaniel Cabezas started the ninth inning rally with a single to left. After Chen singled, Zeke DeVoss laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pitcher Brandon Berl bobbled the ball and the bases were loaded. Ajay Meyer replaced Berl and was greeted by a Wes Darvill two-run double to right to tie the game 2-2. The Lugnuts intentionally walked Ryan Cuneo and Hoilman crushed a walk-off grand slam to the palm trees in the left field berm. The blast was the Chiefs first grand slam of the season and the first homer of the year for Hoilman.
Burke was great in his first career start allowing just three singles over six shutout innings. The lefty walked one and struck out four. Wells (1-1) struck out two and allowed two runs on five hits over three innings.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Paul Hoilman (DH)) - Hoilman was 2-for-5 with a single and a walk-off grand slam. He now has a nine-game hit streak and nine RBI on the season.
