Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Hector Hernandez gave the River Bandits another strong start, allowing three earned runs over five innings, and Colin Walsh hit his team-leading fifth home run of the year, but it was not enough as the Quad Cities fell to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 3-2.

Bowling Green right fielder Drew Vettleson fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two doubles to lead the Hot Rods' offense. Starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (3-1) held the River Bandits to just one run on five hits over his six innings. He walked leadoff man Luis Mateo to start the game, before retiring Nick Martini and Colin Walsh. Mateo then stole third, but was stranded when Carpenter struck out David Medina looking.

Vettleson tagged Hernandez (1-1) early, when he connected on a pitch and sent it over the center field wall for his second home run of the season. Bowling Green first baseman Jeff Malm doubled, but was stranded at second when Hernandez ended the inning by inducing a pop-up to Jeremy Patton at third. Neither team scored again still the third, when the Hot Rods pushed across their second run of the contest.

Vettleson led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a ground ball to first. Malm then doubled to center, scoring Vettleson easily and giving Bowling Green a 2-0 advantage. They tacked on their third run in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single by Ryan Brett that scored Juniel Querecuto from third

The River Bandits finally got to Carpenter in the sixth, when Luis Mateo hit his first home run of the season; a solo shot to left center, that cut the Hot Rods' lead to 3-1. To start the seventh, reliever Jacob Partridge replaced Carpenter. The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when Colin Walsh hit his fifth home run of the season to left field, pulling the River Bandits within one. Partridge stranded pinch runner Matt Williams at first after striking out Anthony Garcia to end the game.

Quad Cities' relievers combined for three shutout innings, allowing only one hit, lowering the River Bandits' ERA to a Midwest League-third best 3.01 on the season. The River Bandits have an off day Wednesday before beginning a six-game home stand Thursday against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 pm.
