Chico Outlaws News Release

CALGARY - After dropping the first game of a doubleheader 6-2 to the Calgary Vipers, the Chico Outlaws held on for an 8-7 victory in game two and snapped their seven game losing streak. It also ended a six game winning streak for Calgary.

In game one, the Outlaws jumped ahead early with two runs in the first. Bobby Hill hit a line drive homer to right, his second of the year, and Al Quintana drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Chico was not able to score the rest of the game, however.

The Vipers responded right away with two in the bottom of the first on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Wilver Perez and Drew Miller. A Jimmy Rohan home run in the second made it 3-2, and then Miller took over. The big left-handed hitter belted two home runs, a two run shot in the third, and a solo blast in the sixth.

After Calgary starter Manny Ayala had to leave in the first due to injury, Sean Hetherington (1-0) filled in more than admirably. The righty pitched four and two-thirds shutout innings to earn the win, allowing only three hits and striking out two. Claudio Galva picked up his fourth save. Chico starter Jason Mackintosh (1-1) took the loss, surrendering four hits and five runs in five and two-thirds.

Chico jumped up big early in game two with a five-run second inning. Chris Lubanski and Jake Rife started the inning with back-to-back singles. Then, Oscar Sigala and Brandon Fowler drove them in with RBI singles. Darrick Hale crushed a two-run double to deep center, scoring Sigala and Fowler. Bobby Hill drove in Hale with an RBI single up the middle.

Drew Miller continued his weekend power surge with a leadoff homer in the fourth, his seventh already this season. Jake Rife answered Miller with a two-run blast to center in the fifth, his second of the year, expanding Chico's lead to 7-1.

It would not come easy for the Outlaws, however. Calgary put up five runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-6. The big blow came on a three-run homer from Louie Templeton, who had nine RBI in the series.

Chico got a critical insurance run in the top of the seventh. Adam Buschini reached on an infield single, stole second, and came around to score on an RBI single by Oscar Sigala. The run proved to be the difference in the game, as Calgary scored once in the bottom of the inning on a Jimmy Rohan RBI triple. Ryan Riddle came on to get his third save and strand the tying and game-winning runs on the corners.

Chico starter Demetrius Banks (2-1) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing seven hits and six runs, while walking three and striking out three. Mark Michael (1-1) was pounded around and took the loss for Calgary, surrendering nine hits and seven runs.
