CRESTWOOD, IL â The Cheetahs beat the Rockford RiverHawks 4-1 tonight in the 2003 season opener at Hawkinson Ford Field. The Cheetah offense was led by outfielder Mark Walker, who drove Nick Gontmaher in with a triple in the third to take the lead 2-1. Winning pitcher James Clelland (1-0) kicked off the season with 6 strikeouts and only one walk in eight innings. Reliever Jaime Quiros picked up his first professional save. Scott Sobkowiak (0-1) took the loss for Rockford.
Cheetahs Manager Mike Moore was very impressed with his team tonight. "We had some really good heads-up base running, and Walker was a huge help in sending Gontmaher in to take the lead," Moore said. "Overall I was very happy with our team staying very aggressive on the first pitch fast balls."
The Cheetahs (1-0) will host the RiverHawks (0-1) again Saturday with a 7:05 game time. Starting pitchers are expected to be Jason Shelley for Rockford and David Campos for the Cheetahs.
