Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Netminder Martin Jones earned his first American Hockey League win in his debut as he backstopped the Manchester Monarchs to a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday evening.
Manchester (5-2-0-1) remains in second place in the Atlantic Division with 11 points. Charlotte (2-6-0-0) is in eighth place in the East Division with four points.
"It was a good week," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We got a lot of effort from our team and we played an honest game. Our goaltending was outstanding for us and we had key scoring from our players. The guys stood up for each other and we were rewarded with the fruits of our labor."
At 6:03 of the third period, Monarchs center Corey Elkins made it 2-0 when he scored on the power play. Elkins carried the puck in from the point where he danced around a Charlotte defender and beat goaltender Mike Murphy on the glove side. Elkins' third goal of the year was assisted by defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov and right wing Brandon Kozun.
The Monarchs got on the board first with a goal by left wing David Meckler at 10:31 of the first period. Right wing John Zeiler carried the puck down the right wing and fired a change-up shot on net as he partially fanned on the puck. Murphy made the initial stop on Zeiler's shot, but the puck slid forward into the slot. The rebound fell onto the stick of Meckler, who was streaking up the middle. Meckler fired the puck home for his fifth goal of the season.
Center Zach Boychuk cut the Monarchs lead in half when he scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play at 7:41 of the third period. Jones made the initial stop on left wing Jacob Micflikier's wrist shot. The rebound bounced into the slot where Boychuk sent in a wrister of his own past Jones. Defenseman Bryan Rodney also assisted on the Checkers lone goal of the game.
Jones (1-0-0) earned his first career win in the AHL with 36 saves on 37 shots. Murphy (2-3-0) took his third loss of the season stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced.
Manchester was 1-for-4 on the power play. Charlotte was also 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Notables: The Monarchs recorded seven of a possible eight points in four games this week to move into second place in the Atlantic Division...Tonight was the first time the Monarchs won when being outshot this season...Left wing David Meckler moved into a tie for first place with left wing Dwight King with eight points each this season...Goaltender Martin Jones won his first AHL game.
