Checkers Shut Out Greenville 4-0

Greenville, SC – February 25, 2003: The Charlotte Checkers won their second straight game on their season-long, six game roadtrip with a 4-0 victory over the Greenville Grrrowl Tuesday night at the BI-LO Center. Scott Meyer turned aside all 25 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season, and the Checkers got goals from Nick Bilotto, Kevin Caulfield, Takahito Suzuki and David Evans. The win allowed the Checkers to pull within six points of fourth place Trenton for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northeast Division, with 17 games to play.

"Greenville is struggling right now but ours guys worked consistently and did what they had to do to win tonight," commented Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam. "Tonight was good preparation for our three games this weekend, the biggest weekend we've had this season." Charlotte will play the Titans in Trenton Friday night and then play Atlantic City Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Boardwalk Hall.

Charlotte took a 1-0 lead to the locker room after the first period on Bilotto's 11th goal of the season, as the Checkers outshot the Grrrowl 11-7. The Checkers increased their lead to 3-0 at the end of the second period with two goals in the middle frame. Caulfield deposited Dusty Jamieson's rebound, his team-leading 22nd goal, by Greenville starting goaltender Damian Rhodes at 5:51 for a two-goal advantage. At 9:23 Suzuki tapped in Bilotto's centering pass for his 19th marker for the 3-0 lead.

Greenville Head Coach John Marks pulled Rhodes in favor of Dan McIntyre at the start of the third period. Charlotte got one final insurance goal at 5:24 when Evans knocked home a Vince Malts shot by McIntyre for the 4-0 final.

"We played together real well tonight," remarked Checkers defenseman Nick Bilotto. "We needed the two points tonight, and wins this time of year are always good."

The Checkers bettered their record to 29-24-2 for 60 points, and improved to 2-1 on the current six-game roadtrip. Greenville dropped to 21-30-6 for 48 points, remaining four points ahead of Augusta and Columbus for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Southeast Division. Charlotte will continue its' roadtrip Friday in Trenton with a crucial game against the Titans.
