Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C.- The Checkers were desperate to win a game to keep the season alive but they trailed early in the contest and never tied it up losing to the South Carolina Stingrays by a score of 4-3. The loss signaled their fourth in the first round series and the end of the season despite winning the first two games of the series.
The Stingrays used an early power-play to score the first goal of the contest. A shot by forward Maxime Lacroix was stopped by Jeff Jakaitis but the rebound went right to Keith Johnson who was left alone in the slot. Johnson ripped a shot between the legs of Jakaitis at 1:29 giving South Carolina a 1-0 advantage. A two-on-one rush down the ice by Stingrays winger Trent Campbell who made a nice pass to Jeff Corey resulted in a goal past a sprawling Jakaitis at 14:26. After twenty minutes, the Stingrays led 2-0.
Charlotte slashed the lead in half during the second period when Jeff Miles took a sharp angle shot that found its way over the right shoulder of Jonathan Boutin at 2:58. Despite the goal, the Stingrays retrieved their two goal advantage just 27 seconds later when Matt Scherer beat Jakaitis with a wrist shot from the right circle over the glove. As the second period ended, the Checkers were down 3-1.
Charlotte would make the contest a one-goal affair when forward Peter Tsimikalis directed a Ryan Murphy shot past Boutin at 1:09 but just as the first time Charlotte scored, the Stingrays struck right back. Spencer Carbery's wrister fooled Jakaitis and somehow found its way into the net one minute and 44 seconds later. Michel Leville's goal for the Checkers made the contest interesting in the final minute of play but the game ended by a 4-3 score and the Checkers season came to a conclusion losing four games to two as South Carolina goes on to play Florida in the second round.
The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
