Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers were decimated by the Florida Everblades in a lopsided 8-2 defeat on Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.
The only goal of the first period was delivered by Checkers forward Matthew Ford on a shorthanded slapshot that fooled Florida goaltender David Leggio at 3:24.
The Everblades took over in the second period scoring five unanswered goals behind Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis. Florida forward Dannick Bouchard tied the contest with his quick wrist shot from the slot that went over the blocker of Jakaitis and in at 4:23. The Everblades took the lead when forward Mark Lee streaked into the Checkers zone and took a shot that deflected off a Checkers defenseman and past Jakaitis at 6:10. Lee would strike again on a breakaway with a nice move around Jakaitis at 8:12. This put the Everblades up 3-1 and they would continue their offensive onslaught during a power play. Florida defenseman Peter Metcalf blasted the puck on a point shot into the Checkers net at 11:53 putting Florida up 4-1. The final goal that would spell the end of the night for Jakaitis was taken by winger Andrew Sweetland 29 seconds later. Sweetland's shot through traffic resulted in the Checkers pulling Jakaitis and putting in Maxime Daigneault.
The Checkers stopped the bleeding momentarily in the third period when Mike Taylor redirected an Ethan Graham point shot past Leggio at 2:40 but, the Everblades weren't done scoring yet. They would end the period with three more tallies as Bouchard scored his second of the game (7:01) and Mathieu Roy (9:46) and Kevin Baker (14:01) also tallied goals ending the contest with Florida skating away with an 8-2 victory.
Notes: The Everblades struck three times on the power play during their five chances while the Checkers went scoreless on two attempts...Jakaitis was pulled in the second period despite making several fantastic saves as he allowed five goals on thirty shots...this game ended the point streak of both Mike Bayrack and Michel Leveille...the Checkers will face off against the Everblades on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at home.
