Checkers Get Burned By Inferno
November 29, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers battled the Columbia inferno for the fourth time this season tonight to a 4-1 loss.
There was no score in the first twenty minutes of play as goaltenders, Curtis Darling for the Checkers and Todd Ford for the Inferno made saves on the 10 and eight shots that came their way respectively.
During the middle frame, the Inferno would finally get on the board and it would be Daniel Sparre that scored as he found a loose puck behind the net and scoped it over the shoulder of Darling giving his team a 1-0 lead at 7:34. He would follow up with his second of the night as he blasted a one-timer into the net during an Inferno two- man advantage at 9:08.
In the final period, Dusty Jamieson would bring the Checkers within a goal when he fired a shot from the left wing side that slid in just inside the far post behind Ford at 1:43. In an odd situation, twice the Checkers thought they had tied the game but the referee had ruled both times that the puck entered the net through the outside and thus, neither were counted as goals. Later, as a Checkers power play expired, Owen Fussey found the puck at center ice and swooped around Darling and buried it low on the catching side at 14:08 giving the Inferno a 3-1 lead. The Inferno would get another goal from Jeremy Hall and skate away with a 4-1 victory.
Notes: Darling stopped 22 of 26 shots while Ford turned aside 24 of 25...Only Columbia tallied a power play goal, both teams had nine chances...Both teams will meet again tomorrow at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Nov. 30 against the Columbia Inferno. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
