Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Nov. 29, 2007)-The Columbia Inferno (8-8-1-2, 19 points) beat the Charlotte Checkers (7-4-0-3, 17 points) 4-1 at the Carolina Coliseum Thursday night, giving the Inferno their first win this season against their division rivals.
The two sides skated to a scoreless tie in the first period thanks in large part to stellar goaltending from Inferno netminder Todd Ford, who stopped all 10 shots he faced, including a penalty shot by winger Jordan Owens.
Winger Daniel Sparre broke the tie for the Inferno at 7:34 of the second period when he scored on a backhander from in close. Sparre added his second of the night, and 12th of the season, just a few minutes later when he one-timed a cross-slot pass from Brad Ralph through Checkers goalie Curtis Darlings's legs.
Charlotte cut Columbia's lead in half, 2-1, when a bouncing puck from winger Dusty Jamieson caromed past Ford. The Checkers came close to tying the game when, on two separate occasions, the puck hit the outside of Ford's net and was caught up in the twine. Both times the shot were ruled to be non-goals.
Inferno winger Owen Fussey put the game out of reach at 14:08 of the third when he collected a Tyson Marsh pass at center ice after leaving serving a two-minute minor for boarding. Fussey used the breakaway to swoop farside on Darling, deked him to the ground and slipped the puck past his blocker-side leg. Rookie winger Jeremy Hall notched his first tally of the season when he tapped a cross-crease pass into the net on Darling's glove side.
The Inferno will head to Charlotte tomorrow night to play the second game of the home-and-home series. The club will return to the Carolina Coliseum to host the Augusta Lynx on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7:05 p.m. for the sixth-annual WMHK 87.9 FM Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal for a $3 discount on any ticket; the plush toys will be donated to local emergency responders so they may give them to help comfort children following tragedy.
