Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers and Potvin family reunited once again on Sunday to "Fight for Ellie" and raised $8,020 to help the family's mounting financial burden. Since March, the Checkers have helped raise more than $17,600.
Ellie Shoal Potvin is a seven-year-old girl battling Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. Her cancer went into remission over the summer but has since returned.
In March, the Checkers hosted "Lift Up Ellie Night", raising more than $9,600 for Ellie's treatment and her family's expenses. The event is also planned for March of this season. The return of Ellie's cancer, however, had created a need for additional fundraising and the team and family opted to host this event due to the seriousness of her condition.
"We wanted to use our resources and incredible fan support to help reinvigorate the fundraising efforts for the Potvin family," said Checkers COO Tera Black. "Based on Ellie's recent diagnosis, we felt it was necessary to have this event early in the season."
The funds raised from this Sunday's event were in the form of ticket sales and monetary donations and Ellie was honored in a pre-game celebration. The Checkers dedicated a pink butterfly sticker - pink being Ellie's favorite color - on the back of every player's helmet for the remainder of the season and presented Ellie with one that was autographed by the players, coaches and staff. She was greeted by all of the Checkers players and also rode the Zamboni between periods.
"Lift Up Ellie Night" will take place again this upcoming March and Ellie's progress can be tracked by visiting http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/elliepotvin.
The Checkers (4-3-1) are at home for 5 of the next 6 games. They will host the East Division-leading Elmira Jackals (7-2-1) on Friday at 7p.m. at Time Warner Cable Arena. Ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com.
