Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte Checkers president Jeff Longo announced today that the team has hired Jason Shaya as director of media relations and broadcasting/sales executive. Tim Donelli will continue to broadcast home games, alongside Shaya, and serve as the team chaplain through Hockey Ministries International.
Shaya, 26, is a native of Detroit where he grew up a loyal fan of the Detroit Red Wings. He comes to the Checkers after spending two seasons in the UHL (now IHL) with the Motor City Mechanics and, most recently, the Chicago Hounds. He served as director of media relations and broadcaster for both organizations.
With the Checkers, Shaya will be responsible for broadcasting all Checkers games, serving as the liaison between the team and the media, writing press releases and updating the team's Web site. In addition to his media and broadcasting responsibilities, he will assist in the team's ticket and corporate sales efforts.
Shaya began his broadcasting career with World Championship Wrestling (now defunct), then went on to become a sports producer for WDIV TV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit. He received a bachelor's degree in radio and television communications from Madonna University and a broadcasting certificate from Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts.
"This is an incredible opportunity to become a part of a well-respected hockey club," said Shaya. "We have some exciting and innovative plans in-store for the broadcasts this season. I take pride in making fans feel the intensity of games over the air as if they were sitting right on the glass at each and every game."
The Checkers will begin their 15th season of play in the ECHL with two home games on opening weekend. The Checkers will host the Columbia Inferno on Friday, Oct. 19 and the Texas Wildcatters on Saturday, Oct. 20. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three-consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399. The Checkers are accepting deposits on all ticket packages. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
