Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Kenton Smith. The Edmonton, Alberta native played in all 72 games two years in a row for the Checkers.
The 2007-08 season will mark Smith's fourth in Charlotte. Last season, he accumulated 29 points (9g, 23a) and was a nominee for the ICHG Ironman Award - his second consecutive nomination.
Smith has played in 258 regular season games with the Checkers recording 25 goals, 89 assists and 314 penalty minutes. He has played in 21 post-season games with 3 goals, 8 assists and 20 penalty minutes. Smith was a member of the 2004-05 team that reached the American Conference Finals.
Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson says Smith is a valuable part of the Checkers organization. "Kenton will provide excellent play and leadership on and off the ice," said Wilkinson.
The Checkers enter their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL in October 2007. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three-consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399. The Checkers are accepting deposits on all ticket packages. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
