Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - Seth Chavez induced a shallow fly ball to left field from Alfonsin Rosario for the final out in a 5-3 Charleston RiverDogs win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Friday night at Pelicans Ballpark. The Pelicans capitalized on an error to load the bases in the final frame before Chavez closed the door. Santiago Suarez struck out a career-high 10 batters as the winning pitcher.
The RiverDogs (20-28) once again raced out to the early lead on the road. With two outs in the second inning, Bryan Broecker worked a walk off Nazier Mule to extend the inning. The designated hitter, Joshuan Sandoval, followed by blasting a two-run home run off the batter's eye to make it 2-0. The home run was the first of the season for Sandoval, who was playing for the third time in the month of May.
Charleston chased Mule in the top of the next frame, when Adrian Santana worked a leadoff walk. Blake Robertson followed with another base on balls versus Erian Rodriguez and the two baserunners quickly executed a double steal. That allowed the Dogs to grab a 3-0 advantage on an RBI single by Woo Shin.
Myrtle Beach (22-26) did not put a man on base against Santiago Suarez until the third inning when Christian Olivo took a base on balls. Alexis Hernandez worked the count full in the next at-bat, eventually getting a fastball at the top of the zone and launching it to the bleachers behind the left field wall for a two-run round-tripper.
The RiverDogs quickly built the margin back to three in the fourth. The inning began with three consecutive singles, the final of which brought in a run off the bat of Narciso Polanco. After Santana hit into a double play, Robertson added one more run with an RBI single to right that extended the lead to 5-2.
The final run allowed by Suarez came on another home run. This time it was Rosario who connected for a solo shot to start the fourth. Suarez ended up working 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Neither team scored over the final five innings.
Jonalbert Rumbol walked the tightrope in his 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, stranding a combined four runners in the sixth and seventh. Chavez earned his second save of the year by working a scoreless eighth and ninth, stranding four as well.
Robertson and Sandoval each collected two hits to lead the way for the nine-hit attack of the RiverDogs. Jacob Wetzel, Rosario and Alexis Hernandez each had two hits as they were responsible for the bulk of the Pelicans seven knocks.
The RiverDogs and Pelicans will return to the ballpark to battle again on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. LHP Drew Dowd (0-2, 3.08) will take the hill first for the RiverDogs. Myrtle Beach will turn to RHP Juan Bello (1-2, 3.52).
