Bush's Grand Slam Powers Woodpeckers' in Win Over GreenJackets
May 31, 2024 - Carolina League (CarL)
Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (24-25) grabbed their third win in four games over the Augusta GreenJackets (19-29) Friday night thanks to a grand slam from catcher Will Bush. The blast was Fayetteville's first grand slam of the season and the deciding swing in a 6-2 victory.
Bush's bomb was the capper of a five-run fourth inning that gave Fayetteville a 6-0 lead. They entered the frame on top 1-0 and put the first four batters on base against Adam Maier (L, 2-3). Cesar Hernandez singled home Oliver Carrillo for the first run and the bases loaded up following a walk by Waner Luciano. After an Alejandro Nunez lineout, Bush slugged a pitch from Maier over the right field wall. It was Bush's second homer of the series and first grand slam inside of Segra Stadium since Pascanel Ferreras on September 7th, 2023.
Sandy Mejia (W, 2-3) put together a season-long start for Fayetteville working 5.0 innings. He did not face more than four batters in a single inning and struck out three of the final six batters he faced. The 20-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic finished with four strikeouts, two walks and scattered four hits in the win.
Hudson Leach held the lead and struck out four in a row at one stage in the middle innings. Wilmy Sanchez took over on the mound in the eighth and recorded the final five outs over 1.2 scoreless innings.
The Woodpeckers have a chance to win the series on Saturday night with RHP Raimy Rodriguez projected to start for Fayetteville against Augusta's RHP Garrett Baumann. First Pitch will be at 7:05 PM at Segra Stadium. It's Black Ops night at the ballpark and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a BP Top giveaway presented by El Cazador & 107.7 The Bounce FM.
