Charlotte FC News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte FC today announced that Andy Quy has joined Head Coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez's backroom staff as the Club's goalkeeper coach.
In addition to his role with the First Team, Quy will oversee goalkeeper development throughout the Club's academy.
Quy, who spent over a decade with Stoke City during their spell in the Premier League, joins the Club with a decorated list of former goalkeepers who studied under his wing.
The England native comes to Charlotte having most recently been the Head of Goalkeeping for Burton Albion, a role where he oversaw the development of goalkeepers from the academy through the first team.
"I'm very excited to come to the Carolinas and join Charlotte FC from the inaugural season. The opportunity to be part of Miguel's staff and have a hand in building the culture of a new Club is incredibly exciting to me," said Quy. "For our goalkeepers, I want to foster a competitive culture where players stay driven and continually strive to be their best while developing youngsters throughout the academy so they can one day join our First Team."
Quy joined Stoke City in 2007 ahead of their automatic promotion to the Premier League and stayed at the West Midlands club until 2019. Nine of his twelve seasons at Stoke were spent in England's top-flight where he coached goalkeepers Thomas Sorensen (Denmark - 101 caps), Asmir Begovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina - 63 caps) and Jack Butland (England - 9 caps). All three were named to World Cup squads after impressive Premier League seasons at Stoke under Quy's tutelage.
In between his stints at Stoke and Burton, Quy was the goalkeeping coach for Brentford FC where he helped the Bees to a third-place league finish in 2020 and an appearance in the Championship Playoffs, which at the time was the club's best finish since the 1940s. While at the London club, Quy coached goalkeeper David Raya who won the league's Golden Glove award with 16 clean sheets.
Shay Given (Ireland - 134 caps), Adam Federici (Australia - 16 caps), and Lee Grant (Stoke City Player of the Year '16-'17) are other goalkeepers Quy has had a hand in developing at various points throughout their careers.
"Andy comes to us with a proven track record of coaching and developing quality goalkeepers and we're very excited for him to come to Charlotte and be a part of Miguel's coaching staff," said Charlotte FC Sporting Director, Zoran Krneta. "The goalkeeper position is a vital part of any successful team, and that is especially true in Major League Soccer, so having an experienced coach like Andy gives our Club a competitive advantage at the First Team level. He is also a key addition for our Academy as we produce talented goalkeepers here in the Carolinas."
Quy is the third assistant named to the CLTFC coaching staff after Christian Lattanzio and Mikel Antía.
