
Charlotte Evens Series With Cyclones In 5-0 Win

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - The Charlotte Checkers used three special teams goals to take a 5-0 win from the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. Two power play goals and a shorthanded tally paced the Checkers attack. Mike Bartlett scored twice for the winners.
The American Conference Semifinals series between the teams is now tied at one win apiece. The third game will be played at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
Charlotte scored the only goal of the first period when Mike Bartlett notched his first playoff goal at 4:19 on a backhander from the faceoff circle to the left of goaltender Jeremy Smith. David Marshall had the assist on the score. The Checkers outshot Cincinnati, 11-6, in the period.
The Checkers scored both goals of the second period when Matt Stefanishon's second goal of the playoffs at 3:33 got things started. Bartlett's second score of the night on the power play at 4:53 stretched the lead to 3-0. The shots again favored Charlotte, 17-12, in the period. The physical nature of the game escalated-as 26 penalty minutes were called in the period. Sixteen of the minutes were whistled in the final 1:54 of the period featured by a fight between Cyclone Dustin Sproat and Checker Andrew Carroll after the period ended.
A pair of third period goals for Charlotte closed the scoring. Mike Taylor's fifth goal of the playoffs came on a backhander in the slot shorthanded at 6:33, while David Marshall's fourth on a five-on-three power play at 12:41 ended the offensive onslaught. The Checkers outshot Cincinnati, 38-25, for the game. Charlotte was two-for-seven with the power play, while Cincinnati was unable to score in five chances. Ryan Munce took the win, stopping all 25 shots he faced. Jeremy Smith took the loss, turning away 33 shots.
Charlotte won the South Division title and American Conference regular season championship by posting a 43-21-8 record. The Checkers were a conference-best 25-8-3 in games at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte is the number one seed in the conference playoffs and knocked out Toledo in the opening round of the postseason in four games. Cincinnati finished as runner-up in the North Division with a 44-25-3 record and upended the fourth-seeded and defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina Stingrays in five games. The Cyclones are the fifth-seeded team in these American Conference playoffs.
The next game of the Cincinnati Cyclones USA Collision Centers postseason will be the third game of this best of seven series, played at U.S. Bank Arena Wednesday night (April 21) at 7:30pm. It will be a Wet Wednesday with one dollar Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life beers sold throughout the evening. The game will be carried on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com. Game four will also be played in Cincinnati on Friday, April 23 at 7:30pm with John Morrell one dollar hot dogs being the specialty item. The fifth game of the series will take place on Saturday, April 24 at 7:30pm at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm with Donatos pizza slices being sold at one dollar each.
