Charlotte Defeats Gwinnett, 7-4

The Lead: The Charlotte Knights defeated the Gwinnett 7-4 on Friday evening at Coolray Field. Atlanta Braves outfielder Nate McLouth is on an MLB rehab assignment and was in the starting lineup for Gwinnett. The G-Braves have lost their last three games and five of their last six since going on a 7-game winning streak. Gwinnett (42-47) remains in third place in the International League South, but are now 12.5 games behind Durham. Charlotte (45-45) remains in second place and 10 games behind Durham.

It Was Over When: In the top of the 3rd inning, Gwinnett starting pitcher Ryne Reynoso gave up 6 runs on 6 hits. The 6 consecutive hits allowed and 7 batters that reached base in a row are both season-highs for Gwinnett.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Reynoso (2-7) allowed 7 R/ER on 10 hits in 5.2 IP. Cory Gearrin pitched 1.1 innings and allowed only 1 hit. Craig Kimbrel held Charlotte scoreless in the final 2 frames.

At the plate: In his first rehab appearance for the Gwinnett Braves, Nate McLouth went 1-for-3 with a single. Joe Thurston went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Freddie Freeman was 2-for-4.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Lucas Harrell (7-8) pitched 6 innings and allowed 4 R (2 ER) on 9 hits. Randy Williams pitched 2 scoreless innings while striking out 1. Ryan Braun earned the save for the Knights.

At the plate: Alejandro De Aza went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored.

On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Charlotte in game three of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. LHP Jose Ortegano (2-5, 6.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Braves. Charlotte has not announced a starter as of press time.

Etc: Legendary broadcaster Pete Van Wieren will be signing copies of his book, Of Mikes and Men: A Lifetime of Braves Baseball, at Coolray Field on Saturday. He will also join Tony Schiavone and Judd Hickinbotham on the G-Braves broadcast on WDUN 550AM.
