Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C.- The Checkers found themselves in familiar territory going into an overtime and shootout against the Mississippi Sea Wolves and it was business as usual for Charlotte winning, 4-3.
The Sea Wolves took only 27 seconds to score the first goal of the contest. After the Checkers failed to clear the puck from their end, Mississippi forward Mike Berry setup Kyle McAllister for a one-timer over the glove of Checkers netminder Maxime Daigneault. The Checkers tied the contest when Ryan Murphy streaked in from the right wing and banged the puck past Sea Wolves goalie Ryan Munce at 10:54. Mississippi retrieved a one-goal advantage after a Mathieu Melanson wrist shot from the top of the left circle found its way through traffic and deflected off the stick of former Checkers Jeff Kyrzakos and into the net at 13:53.
The Checkers tied the contest in the second period when Michael Busto's point shot directed right to an open Mike Bayrack who roofed a shot over Munce at 16:37 locking the game at 2-2 after forty minutes.
During the third period, the Sea Wolves took a one-goal lead for the third time when Kyrzakos slapshot from the point squeezed past Daigneault at 3:09. Charlotte forward Lee Falardeau tied the contest at 3-3 after his wrist shot sailed over the blocker side of Munce at 5:22.
Neither team was able to end the game in overtime and it would take shootout goals from Chris Murray, Michel Leveille and Chris Capraro to end the contest after Mississippi could only muster goals from Chris Zarb and Kyrzakos.
Notes: The Checkers and Sea Wolves have battled in a shootout or overtime six times with the Checkers only losing once in a shootout...Capraro missed a shootout attempt earlier in the contest.
The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on 8 against the Trenton Devils at 4 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $396.
