Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - For the sixth time this season, the Mississippi Sea Wolves and the Charlotte Checkers had a game decided by overtime or a shootout, with Charlotte pulling out a narrow victory in the shootout 4-3 at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte on Sunday.
Kyle McAllister's seventh goal of the season gave Mississippi a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the first period as he one-timed a pass from Mike Berry past Charlotte goaltender Maxime Daigneault. Brian Deeth evened the game at one-apiece for Charlotte when he backhanded a loose puck past Sea Wolves goalie Ryan Munce at 10:54 of the first period. Mathieu Melanson's 25th goal of the year gave the Sea Wolves a 2-1 lead when his shot from the top of the slot beat Daigneault through traffic at 13:53 of the first.
Charlotte tied the game at two when Mike Bayrack waited for Munce to drop to the ice and shot the puck over him for his 18th goal of the season at 16:37 of the second.
Jeff Kyrzakos notched his 12th goal of the season when his blast from the point eluded Daigneault along the ice at 3:09 of the third. Just over two minutes later, Lee Falardeau beat Munce on the stick side to tie the game at three-apiece at 5:22 of the third.
The game stayed tied through the remainder of the third period and overtime, as the Sea Wolves and Checkers went to a shootout for the second time this season.
After taking a 2-1 lead in the shootout in the top of the third round on a shootout goal from Jeff Kyrzakos, Ryan Munce appeared to be injured on the following shot from Michel Leveille, who scored to even the shootout at two-apiece. Ryan Menei was stopped on his shot in the fourth round by Daigneault, and then Charlotte's Chris Capraro was able to beat Munce, who appeared to have difficulty moving in the crease, for the shootout deciding goal. The Sea Wolves fate was sealed when Daigneault stopped the Alex Parent, who was the Sea Wolves fifth shooter.
Ryan Munce made 43 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped 1-of-4 shooters in the shootout to earn an OT, and the Sea Wolves were 0-for-4 on the power play.
The next broadcast of Sea Wolves hockey is Tuesday when the Sea Wolves host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 CT, and will be heard on the B2 Networks and at www.msseawolves.com. The pre-game show presented by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will begin 15 minutes before the opening faceoff!
