Bombers Fall to Royals in Sunday Evening Match-Up
March 1, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Reading, PA- The Bombers looked to continue their two-game winning streak as they took on Reading this evening at the Sovereign Center. Jim Henkemeyer continued his good play as he notched his 4th goal of the season beating the Royals' goaltender at the 8:57 mark in the first. Nino Musitelli and Christian Gaudet earned the assists. The lead was short lived as just nine seconds later Reading's Chris Stevens earned his 15th goal of year, as he was able to slip one by the Bombers' David Shantz. Reading was able to grab an early lead when Levi Nelson caused a turnover in the Bombers' zone and with a nice slap-shot was able to beat Shantz on the glove side. David Shantz came up with a beautiful save for the highlight of the period, as he denied Chris Stevens on a penalty shot. Shantz finished the period turning away 12 of the 14 shots he faced.
The second period belonged to the Royals, as they were able to extend their lead just 2:43 into the second period. Chris Stevens notched his 2nd goal of the night and 16th of the year. Rudisuela and Hooton assisted on the power-play goal for the Royals. Reading would continue their scoring at the 12:27 mark when Mac Faulkner led a short-handed break to give the Royals a 4-1 lead. They would add one more goal as Brock Hooton earned his 18th goal of the season, giving them a 4-1 leading heading into the final twenty minutes. The Bombers fired 10 shots on the Royals Ouzas during the period, and out-shot Reading 30-29 through two periods.
The Bombers would add a goal in the third as Justin Chwedoruk notched his 11th goal of the season, as fan favorite Britt Dougherty and Logan Bittle earned assists. David Shantz, in net for the Bombers, had 35 saves on the night, while the offense out-shot Reading 44 to 41 for the game.
