Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Mario Holmann and Austin Jackson combined to drive in five runs, and the Charleston pitching staff struck out 12 batters as the RiverDogs defeated the Sand Gnats, 6-1, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 6,187 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Charleston has won three consecutive games and improves to 9-8 in the second half (47-40 overall) while Savannah falls to 9-8 in the second half (36-50 overall).

Charleston scored three times in the second inning with two outs against Savannah starter Craig Stammen (5-8). Holmann opened the scoring with by blooping two-run double to left, and he scored when the next batter Jackson grounded an RBI single.

The RiverDogs added another run in the fourth when Jackson's RBI double plated Tim Battle, who had singled.

The early offense proved plenty of run support for Charleston starter Erick Abreu (2-1), who pitched 6.2 shutout innings and scattered only four hits while striking out eight of the 26 batters he faced. With his impressive outing, Abreu has now allowed only two earned runs in his last four starts.

The RiverDogs fifth run came in the seventh inning when Jackson scored on a wild pitch, and the hosts secured their final run in the eighth on Holmann's RBI single to center.

Reliever R.J. Swindle, the former Big South Conference player of the year, pitched 1.1 innings and fanned four while Cory Stuart pitched the ninth frame and allowed an unearned tally.

The RiverDogs' pitching staff flirted with their first shutout of the second half, but Francisco Plasencia's ninth inning two-out single that scored John Poppert thwarted the effort.

Stammen pitched five complete innings and suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out seven RiverDogs.

The Sand Gnats were led offensively by Dee Brown, who collected two of Savannah's five hits.

Jackson paced the RiverDogs with three of the team's 11 hits, while Irwil Rojas, Battle and Holmann each had a pair of knocks.

Game 2 of this three-game series is set for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. with Charleston sending southpaw Zach Kroenke (5-4, 3.93 ERA) to the mound while Savannah sends lefty John Lannan (4-6, 5.68 ERA).
