Lake County Captains News Release
(Salisbury, MD)-For the second straight week, the Lake County Captains pulled out a 3-1, 10-inning Saturday night win against the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Just as they did a week ago, the Captains scored two runs in the top of the 10th Saturday night to capture their second straight win over the Shorebirds at Perdue Stadium.
Johnny Drennen's RBI single to center with the bases loaded and one out in the 10th drove in pinch-runner Chris De La Cruz to break a 1-1 tie. The next hitter, Mike Conroy hit a deep grounder to second to chase home Juan Valdes to make it 3-1.
The Captains loaded the bases with one out against Tony Neal (0-1) on a pair of walks and a single. Lefty Russ Petrick came in to face Drennen, a left-handed batter, and surrendered the go-ahead single.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Shorebirds (5-11) loaded the bases against Matt Davis on a single and two walks. With two outs, Arturo Rivas flied out to Drennen in deep center to end the game. Davis registered his 18th save, which is tops among active pitchers in the SAL.
Matt Loberg (3-3) pitched two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth for the Captains. He worked around a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, getting a strikeout of Mark Fleisher and Rivas on a groundout.
Conroy drove in the Captains' first run with an RBI double in the fourth off Delmarva starter Reid Hamblet. It was the only run Hamblet gave up in seven innings.
Captains starter Albert Vargas worked five scoreless innings and left with a 1-0 lead. Ryan Finan tied the game 1-1 with a solo homer in the sixth off Cody Bunkelman.
The Captains (9-8) have won two of three in the series at Delmarva. The series and road-trip wrap-up is today at 1:35. RHP Jeff Stevens will start against 18-year-old phenom Brandon Erbe of Delmarva.
Following the weekend series at Delmarva, the Captains will kick off an eight-game homestand on Tuesday, July 11th at Classic Park. On Friday, July 14th, fans can enjoy a post-game fireworks show presented by Dollar Bank, and on Saturday, July 15th, the first 2,000 fans receive a mimi-bobblehead of former Captains first-baseman Ryan Mulhern, courtesy of WKNR AM 850.
