CHARLESTON, WV - The Power scored two runs late to force extra innings, but fell in 10 innings, 3-2, in the series finale against the Charleston RiverDogs Tuesday evening at Appalachian Power Park.
West Virginia's offense woke up late in the game. Lolo Sanchez singled to start the ninth and Calvin Mitchell roped a double to left-center field to score the speedy center fielder and tie the game at two.
The Power scored their first run in the eighth. Connor Kaiser walked to lead off the inning, and Rafelin Lorenzo smacked him in with a base hit to right field to cut Charleston's lead to 2-1.
Elvis Escobar (2-2) took the tough-luck loss in the tenth after allowing the extra-innings placed on runner, Wilkerman Garcia, to score after a Welfrin Mateo sacrifice bunt and a Leonardo Molina RBI single, giving the RiverDogs a 3-2 lead.
West Virginia failed to score its placed on runner in the bottom half of the inning, as Daniel Alvarez (1-2) locked down the victory.
Hunter Stratton worked another quality start for West Virginia (26-29, 63-58). He twirled six innings, allowing five hits and two runs. The righty punched out five batters and did not allow a hit from the third through the fifth innings in the loss.
Logan Stoelke made his South Atlantic League debut in the eighth inning. The right-handed reliever fanned the first batter, David Metzgar, he faced. The Houston native finished his outing with a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth.
The Power bullpen tossed three perfect innings and struck out five RiverDog batters from the seventh to the ninth. John Pomeroy and Beau Sulser finished with one inning of work apiece.
The RiverDogs (25-32, 58-66) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. The lead-off batter, Metzgar, singled before coming home on an Oswaldo Cabrera base knock to center field two batters later. The run ended a 22-inning scoring drought for the RiverDogs against the Power.
Charleston added an insurance run in the sixth after a lead-off double from Carlos Vidal. Cabrera sacrificed Vidal to third with a bunt back to Stratton. Next, Dermis Garcia lined a single to center to plate Cabrera and increase the lead to 2-0.
