Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge used a huge third quarter to propel them to a 114-93 victory over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in front of 2,794 at the Canton Memorial Civic Center Friday night. The win snapped a two-game losing skid for Canton and puts them back over .500 at 8-7 on the season. The loss drops Fort Wayne to 5-11 in Steve Gansey's head coaching debut.
A closely contested first half found Fort Wayne with a slim three-point lead at the intermission, but the Charge came out surging in the third period. Canton shot 16-of-24 for a .667 percentage from the field with 10 assists and outrebounded Fort Wayne 11-4 in the period. They scored a season-high 36 points in the quarter, with Frank Hassell pouring in 10 himself to go along with his four rebounds.
The Charge did not let up to start the fourth with their 88-77 lead. Canton went on a 15-6 run to begin the final quarter en route to their largest margin of victory yet this season. Their 114 points on .543 shooting were also both team-highs for the year. The win also gives Canton a 2-1 edge in the season series with Fort Wayne, as the home team has won all three matchups. The Charge are now 6-4 overall at home.
Tyrell Biggs led the way for the Charge with 26 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Biggs came into the game ninth in the D-League in scoring averaging 19.6 a contest. Hassell had his second double-double in his three games with Canton scoring 22 points with 12 boards and three steals, all season-highs. He is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds this season in relief off the bench.
Other notables for the Charge included T.J. Campbell providing six points, a team-high eight assists and perhaps the highlight of the game with a diving save over the scorer's table into the laps of onlookers. Christian Eyenga added six points, three rebounds and two blocks in his Charge Debut. Antoine Agudio dropped in 13 points for his 10th double-digit scoring affair in 14 games played this season.
Fort Wayne was paced by Ron Howard's 23 points and five rebounds. Darnell Lazare scored 21 with five boards to give him his third 20 plus point output in three games against Canton this season. Gilbert Brown supplied 19 points off the bench, while Walker Russell Jr. scored 10 with eight assists.
The two teams will meet again in less than 24 hours at the War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
