Grand Rapids Drive News Release
CANTON - The Canton Charge (18-24) fought off a late rally by the Grand Rapids Drive (22-20) to come away with a 93-85 win at home on Friday night. The Charge pulled off their third win in a row, handing a Drive squad their second consecutive loss coming off a recent eight-game win streak.
Ante Zizic and Marcus Thornton paced a balanced Charge offense. Zizic scored 18 points with 10 rebounds while Thornton also had 18 points, including free throws that helped ice the game in the final 30 seconds of play. London Perrantes also impacted the stat sheet for the Charge with 15 points, five rebounds and seven assists, and John Holland had a similar stat line with 13 points, seven boards and five assists.
KJ McDaniels paced the Drive off the bench for the second consecutive game with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Drive's starting big man duo of Derek Willis and Landry Nnoko scored 11 and 14 points respectively, with Nnoko also grabbing 18 rebounds and Willis eight. Willis also paced the team with four made three-pointers and three blocks.
The Charge had a two-point lead at halftime, and put together a surge in the third quarter that gave them a lead they did not surrender. The Drive cut said lead to just two points twice in the fourth quarter, but were never able to force a tie or take the lead back in the waning moments of the game.
Canton put together a strong defensive performance, holding the Drive to their lowest scoring total since November 26 and second-lowest of the season. The Drive managed just 36 percent shooting from the field, and failed to get easy baskets in transition either as they forced just nine turnovers on the night. The Charge did not have their greatest offensive game either, but outshot the Drive from the field while also hoisting seven more field goal attempts because of their low turnover rate.
The Charge host the Delaware 87ers Saturday night looking for their fourth straight win. The Drive will look to get back in the win column as their next game is also against Delaware, on Tuesday.
