Charge Drop Second-Straight to BayHawks

The Canton Charge fell to the Erie BayHawks for the second time in as many games after a 110-97 loss at the Erie Insurance Arena on Saturday night. The loss puts Canton's record at 20-14 on the year while Erie improved their total to 19-15.

Both teams were knotted at 26-26 after the first period, with each shooting well over 50% and neither leading by more than two buckets. The offensive barrage continued in the second quarter, with the Charge shooting 58% and the BayHawks hitting 65% of shots with 10 ties and three lead changes. Erie was able to pull ahead for the 59-53 advantage at the half by using a 9-3 run in the final 2:22.

Erie made their move in the third quarter, outscoring Canton 29-18 for their largest lead of the night at 87-72. After their hot shooting start of 58% in the first half, the Charge were held to just 6-of-24 shooting for 25% in the third quarter. Their deficit reached as many as 18 in the fourth quarter, but Canton made a 15-4 run over a span of 5:40 to cut Erie's advantage to 100-93 with 4:01 to play. That's as close as the Charge would get after the BayHawks would score on their next two possessions coupled with two-consecutive defensive stops to push their lead back to double-digits for good.

Jorge Gutierrez led the Charge by notching his third double-double of the year with 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting, a season-high 12 assists, eight rebounds, two steals and one block in 38 minutes. Kyle Gibson netted a team-high 18 points with two rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes. Micheal Eric came off the bench to add nine points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes, while Arinze Onuaku poured in 15 points with two blocks in 19 minutes. Josh Selby added 12 points with four rebounds and one steal in 30 minutes.

Kyle Goldcamp paced the BayHawks with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting with three rebounds in 30 minutes. D.J. Kennedy poured in 16 points with eight rebounds and seven assists in 34 minutes. Henry Sims scored 12 points with seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks in 32 minutes. Demonte Harper came off the bench to provide 16 points, three rebounds and three steals on 24 minutes. Erie dished out a Canton opponent all-time best 36 assists, while the Charge set a new season-high with 27 dimes of their own.

Canton will host the Idaho Stampede on Thursday, February 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Civic Center for School Day.
