
Champions Sign Cuban to be Starting Shortstop

April 7, 2015, Ottawa, ON - The new starting shortstop for the Ottawa Champions has taken a long and winding road to get to Canada.
The team has agreed to terms with Roberto Carlos Ramirez, who defected from Cuba in 2012, played independent ball in 2013, and spent last season in with Gigantes de Rivas in Nicaragua.
While in Nicaragua last year, the 29-year-old batted .347 as the Gigantes de Rivas won the league championship.
Ramirez split 2013 between the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the United League and the El Paso Diablos of the American Association.
Altogether he hit .357 in 70 games with zero homeruns, 33 RBI, and 19 stolen bases in 24 chances.
His numbers with the Cuban National Team in 2012 were equally impressive, as he batted .339 with four homeruns.
The Champions' roster is close to being set as they prepare for Opening Day, May 22nd at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park against the Sussex County Miners.
