Champions in Tough against Miners

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Champions could only manage six hits on the Friday evening as they fell to the Sussex County Miners 9-3 at RCGT Park. The Champions went run-for-run with the Miners in the first four innings before the visitors pulled away by scoring six unanswered runs.

"You're not going to win a lot of ballgames when you give up nine runs," said manager Hal Lanier following the loss. "The pitching's got to take over. The road trip went exactly the same as we saw tonight and you're not going to win many ballgames like that."

The Miners LHP Tyler Alexander turned back the clock in a performance straight out of the 1970s. Alexander threw a complete game despite giving up the three runs early. His final pitch count was an unheard of 137.

After the Miners scored two unearned runs on RHP Noah Gapp in the third inning, the Champions responded via a home run by 2B Steve Nyisztor. Nyisztor got just enough of an inside fastball to send it over the left field fence, with SS Daniel Bick coming around to score as well.

The Miners retook the lead in the top of the fourth, but Ottawa got some production from the bottom of their order with CF Chase Harris singling home 3B Jordan Caillouet. However, that would be the Champions last hit until the ninth inning when the game was well out of reach.

"We're giving away way too many runs with two outs," said Lanier. "We're making some bad mistakes that should never happen in baseball, like throwing the ball back without calling timeout."

LF Coco Johnson extended his on-base streak to 12 games by going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, and RF Sebastien Boucher also walked twice before being lifted in the eighth inning in favour of INF Kyle Zirbes.

The Champions will try to exact some revenge on Sussex County tomorrow (Saturday, June 2) at 7:05 p.m. Their series will wrap up on Sunday (1:30 p.m.), but Ottawa will stay at RCGT Park to welcome the Quebec Capitales and Salina Stockade in back-to-back three game sets.
