Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Champions relied on a four-run sixth inning to defeat the first-place Sussex County Miners 6-4 at RCGT Park on Friday evening.
"Tonight was a big win for us," said Champions manager Hal Lanier following the victory. "When you can get back-to-back hits with the bases loaded, you're usually going to have a pretty big inning. That's what we did in the sixth."
1B Vinny Guglietti blew the game wide open with a double in that sixth inning that scored 3B Jordan Caillouet and RF Steve Brown. C Zak Cobly and CF Chase Harris also had RBIs in the frame, which ultimately sealed the win for Ottawa.
The game wasn't without a few tense moments in the latter stages. RHP Daniel Carela inherited a situation with two men in scoring position and only one out in the bottom of the eight. The first-year Champion was able to induce two flyouts to end the threat however.
LHP Scott Maine earned his fifth save of the season, which now ranks him third in Champions history. Maine had to work for it, as four of the first five batters reached base, but he was eventually able to strikeout 2B Mikey Reynolds to end the game.
"This is a big series for us," said Lanier. "They have a great ballclub. They've got a lot of speed and good pitching. They've won a lot of games late. Scott walked a couple of guys and worked out of it. That's why he's the closer."
Colby earned his first hit in an Ottawa uniform in the fourth inning and hit another single in the sixth. SS Daniel Bick also swung the bat well, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
RHP Jake Hale (W, 4-3) went six innings, giving up two runs to notch his team-leading fourth win of the season.
The Champions will continue their three-game set with the Miners tomorrow, Saturday, June 23 at 7:05 p.m. The series will wrap up on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., before Ottawa hits to road for a four-game series with the Trois-Rivières Aigles.
