Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA - Four Rawhide players will represent the California League in the annual Cal-Carolina All-Star Game, the League announced earlier today. Top pitching prospect Andrew Chafin, shortstop Chris Owings, and catcher Raywilly Gomez will represent Visalia in North Carolina on June 19th. David Holmberg, who now pitches in Double-A Mobile, will also represent the Rawhide on the All-Star roster.
David Holmberg, who came into the season as the #6 ranked prospect in the Diamondbacks system by Baseball America, will not play in the All-Star game due to his recent promotion to Double-A Mobile on June 7th. Holmberg started 12 games with the Rawhide, posting a 6-3 record with a 2.99 ERA (26 ER/78.1 IP).
Andrew Chafin has also been a great asset for the Rawhide this season. The 21-year old left-hander is currently in his first year in full-season affiliated baseball. He has led the California League in strikeouts for most of the 2012 season. His pitching repertoire includes a slider, which Baseball America describes as "unhittable at times".
Joining Chafin and Holmberg will be the talented shortstop and top prospect Chris Owings. Owings will start at shortstop for the California League, the only starter represented by the Rawhide. Owings has tremendous range on defense and has continued to improve at the plate. He has already matched his home run total (11) from last season in 54 games in 2012.
Catcher Raywilly Gomez will also join the All-Star roster. Gomez has been one of the key offensive pieces for Rawhide this season. He consistently works deep into the count and has proven to pitchers around the league that he is a tough out. As of June 11th, Gomez had struck out just 21 times in 164 at-bats, while drawing 26 walks. He has held one of the top on-base percentages in the league throughout the first-half of the 2012 season.
The 2012 All-Star Game will take place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on June 19th.
