Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night matchup, the Salmon Kings took the ice at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre as they looked for a three-game sweep of the Utah Grizzlies. Jimmy Spratt made his Victoria debut with the start, while Utah went with Andrew Engelage between the pipes.

The first period saw the Salmon Kings pressure the Grizzlies as they set a physical tone with large hits by Derick Martin and Tommy Maxwell early. Victoria came close to scoring the game's first goal as Chad Painchaud skated down the right side into the offensive zone. As he moved through the right face-off dot, Painchaud dished the puck to Rob Hennigar who let off a quick one-timer on net. The attempt seemed destined for the back of the net, but was blocked on a great play by Matt Sorteberg. A gigantic hit by Maxwell on Giffen Nyren midway through the frame along the backboards led to a melee in the Utah zone. After the hit, Maxwell was instantly jumped by Brian Kilburg which sparked a second bout between Nyren and Wilson. Both players exchanged shots before Wilson knocked Nyren down to the ice for the decision. Victoria continued to control the play as they hemmed Utah in their own end in the final minutes of the period, but they couldn't beat Engelage. The teams went into the first intermission scoreless.

After relentless play in the Grizzlies' end, the Salmon Kings opened the scoring at the 2:51 mark of the second period. As Utah attempted to clear their zone, Hennigar forced a turnover and fired a quick pass to Painchaud. The Salmon Kings' forward came in through center ice and wristed the puck past Engelage for his 21st marker of the season. Victoria didn't stop there as just over three minutes later Painchaud came out from behind the net, spun and whipped a shot between the legs of the Utah goaltender. Painchaud nearly recorded the hat-trick on a man-advantage late in the period. The attempt came as the Kings' winger closed in on the right side of the net. As he went to slam the puck in low side, Engelage was in place with the glove to make the save. As the home side continued the pressure, Utah got on the board in the dying seconds of the period. A late shot on the power play by Simon Ferguson from the left point with four seconds deflected off a defender and in to cut the Salmon Kings' lead in half. The tally was Ferguson's team-leading 19th of the year and made it a 2-1 game through 40 minutes.

The third frame saw back-and-forth action as the play evened out between the two teams. Victoria continued to sustain a physical presence throughout the game as Cam Ritchie laid out Kevin Deeth at the Utah blue line that started a mini-brawl beside the away team bench. Guthrie ended up with a slashing penalty on the play that gave the Salmon Kings another power play opportunity. Near the end of the man-advantage Ferguson skated out alone on a shorthanded breakaway after he took a stretch pass from Hugo Carpentier. With Matt Siddall on his tail, Ferguson moved toward the hash marks where he snapped a shot over the glove of Spratt to knot the game at two at 4:54. The Grizzlies had another breakaway attempt with six minutes left as defenseman Brock Wilson took a pass as he came out of the penalty box. Wilson moved into the slot before he snapped a shot that was stopped by the Salmon Kings' netminder. Spratt continued his strong play late in the period as he made some of his best saves of the night in the final minutes, including a glove save on Marcus Carroll with six seconds left in regulation. The third period ended in a 2-2 tie as the game end to overtime.

At 1:33 of overtime, Matt Clarke blasted a shot from the point which was tipped by Paul McIlveen between the pads of Spratt. The goal was McIlveen's 11th of the campaign and completed the comeback for Utah. Grizzlies 3 Salmon Kings 2.

Victoria went 0/5=00.0% on the power play, while Utah was 1/6=16.7%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Grizzlies 38-22.
