July 25, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - CF Montréal will conclude the group phase of the 2023 Leagues Cup on Wednesday night, hosting D.C. United at 7:30pm at Stade Saputo (MLS Season Pass, BPM Sports).
Having defeated Pumas UNAM 2(4)-2(2) on penalties last Saturday, the Montrealers have two points in the East 2 group standings and will be looking to qualify for the knockout phase of the tournament with a win in regulation time or on penalties.
This will be Montreal's third meeting with D.C. in 2023. In the MLS regular season this year, Montreal has a 0-1-1 record against their opponents. Wayne Rooney's men won the first meeting 1-0 on April 15 at Stade Saputo, while Montreal managed a 2-2 draw in the rematch on May 31 at Audi Field. Sunusi Ibrahim and Ariel Lassiter scored within two minutes of each other in the 80th minute to salvage a point on the road.
While Montreal's overall regular season record against D.C. stands at 9-9-9, at home in particular, the Bleu-blanc-noir is 6-4-4 and 5-4-3 at Stade Saputo.
Beyond Lassiter and Ibrahim, forward Mahala Opoku is the only other active CF Montréal player to score against D.C. United. This Monday, the Club reached a new agreement with the 22-year-old Ghanaian, signing him to a new contract effective immediately through the 2026 season, with an option year in 2027.
As for the visitors, Wednesday marks their debut in this new competition. They will conclude their group stage this Saturday when they welcome Pumas UNAM to Audi Field.
In their last MLS outing before the Leagues Cup break, D.C. fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the New England Revolution on July 15 at Gillette Stadium. Despite this result, the team finds itself with 24 points and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, holding onto the final playoff spot.
The two highest-ranked clubs in each of the 15 groups of the preliminary phase will advance to the Round of 32. At the end of the competition, the tournament finalists and the winner of the third-place match will earn a place in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.
The Leagues Cup 2023 Champion also qualifies directly to the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16.
