Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

AKRON, OH - Luis Cessa threw seven scoreless innings and Gavin Cecchini delivered a three-run double to push the Binghamton Mets to a 3-1 win over the Akron RubberDucks on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. Cessa's team-leading seventh victory ended Binghamton's four-game losing streak.

After navigating through three scoreless innings, Cessa needed an unorthodox double play to wiggle out of a jam in the fourth. With two aboard and one out, Jordan Smith hit a humpback liner to second. LJ Mazzilli caught the drive, but threw high to first in an attempt to double off the runner. Catcher Xorge Carrillo backed up the play and fired to third where Josh Rodriguez tagged out Anthony Gallas attempting to advance a base.

On the heels Fof that defense stand, Binghamton finally snapped their offensive funk in the fifth. Following a leadoff walk by Josh Rodriguez, Aderlin Rodriguez dropped a single into left-field, ending a stretch of 29 straight hitless at-bats for the B-Mets, dating back to the fourth inning on Saturday night.

Akron shortstop Erik Gonzalez added fuel to the Binghamton rally and loaded the bases by booting Jared King's ground ball. Cecchini cleared them by ripping Morimando's 1-2 pitch into the left-field corner. Cecchini's double, his 16th of the season and Binghamton's first hit with a runner in scoring position since Thursday gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Cessa got stronger as the game progressed. After Yandy Diaz tripled with two outs in the sixth, the righty blew three fastballs past Anthony Gallas to end the frame. Cessa capped his strong day with a perfect seventh.

Following Matt Koch's perfect eighth, Paul Sewald took over in the ninth. Gallas dashed Binghamton's shutout hopes by launching a two-out solo homer, his seventh of the season. Sewald bounded back to retire Ronny Rodriguez for his 14th save of the year.

Cessa (7-4) struck out six and walked only one while scattering six hits in his fourth win in six starts. Morimando (5-7) was touched for three runs (two earned) on three hits over six innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (38-36) conclude their season series against the RubberDucks on Monday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Michael Fulmer takes the mound against RHP Mike Clevinger. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.

POSTGAME NOTES: In two starts at Canal Park Luis Cessa has earned two wins and thrown 14.0 scoreless innings...Binghamton secured the season series win over the RubberDucks with the victory...the game clocked in at 2:09, the B-Mets second-shortest nine-inning game, trailing only Saturday night's 2:04 affair
