TRENTON, NJ - Casey Lawrence allowed one run in seven strong innings and K. C. Hobson went 3-for-3 with a two-run double as the Fisher Cats won a fourth straight game 5-2 in Trenton on Sunday afternoon.
Lawrence (6-8) held the Thunder scoreless on only one hit through the first six innings before running into a little trouble in the seventh. He finished the game allowing four hits, walking one and striking out four.
The Fisher Cats (35-38) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of some wildness by Trenton's starter Kyle Haines (1-5). Dalton Pompey (2-for-4) singled but was erased on a fielders choice by Roemon Fields. Jon Berti and Hobson walked to load the bases and Ryan Schimpf hit a sacrifice fly for the game's first run.
New Hampshire mounted a two-out rally to score three runs in the top of the fifth. Pompey and Fields singled. Pompey scored on a wild pitch as Fields moved to third. After Jon Berti drew a walk, Hobson ripped a two-run double for a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Dwight Smith Jr. tripled and scored on a single by Kevin Nolan to make it 5-0.
The Fisher Cats pitching staff saw a string of 21 consecutive scoreless innings end when the Thunder (40-35) plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Greg Bird singled, moved to third on a single by Tony Renda, scoring on Dan Fiorito's single.
Jake Cave scored in the bottom of the eighth inning as Trenton closed to 5-2. He walked and moved to second when Bird walked. Mark Payton singled and Tony Renda's pop fly was misplayed in right field as Cave scored.
Chad Girodo secured the final five outs of the game to earn his first Double-A save for the Fisher Cats. He struck out Taylor Dugas to end the Trenton threat in the eighth inning and induced a game-ending double play by Danny Oh in the ninth.
