Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Eight unanswered runs turned an early 2-0 deficit into an 8-2 Cedar Rapids Kernels victory Saturday against the Peoria Chiefs in front of 2,454 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels (33-26) scored in each of their final four at-bats while getting a 5-0 series lead over the Chiefs (22-37). Cedar Rapids is on a six-game win streak overall.

Moises Castillo put Peoria ahead, 2-0, during the second inning. After Chandler Redmond's one-out walk, Castillo launched a two-run home run into the Plumbers & Pipefitters Pavilion to open Saturday's scoring.

The Kernels began their strong closing run with a pair of tallies that leveled the contest at 2-2 in the fifth. Wander Javier's sacrifice fly plated Edouard Julien, and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. followed with a groundout that brought in Alex Isola.

Gabriel Maciel lifted Cedar Rapids to its 4-2 lead within bottom of the sixth inning. Max Smith hit a leadoff single and scored on Maciel's triple. Two batters later, Julien grounded out to drive Maciel home.

A three-run seventh inning pushed the advantage to 7-2 Kernels. A wild pitch to Smith allowed Keirsey to score. The next pitch was crushed by Smith over the wall in left-center field for a two-run blast.

Cedar Rapids increased its lead to 8-2 in the home half of the eighth. Julien picked up a leadoff walk, which was his Minor League Baseball-high 63rd base on balls this year, and he scored after singles from Isola and Seth Gray.

Erik Manoah Jr. (1-0) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief and earned the win. He succeeded Jon Olsen who registered a personal-best 5.2 innings pitched and career-high-tying five strikeouts while giving up just two runs.

Nick Trogrlic-Iverson (3-3) conceded four runs over five-plus innings of work as the losing pitcher. Trogrlic-Iverson, Enmanuel Solano, and Paul Schwendel all allowed multiple runs in the game.

Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 2:05 p.m., and the pitching matchup is Cedar Rapids southpaw Tyler Watson (1-0, 2.45) versus Peoria right-hander Jack Ralston (1-4, 3.95). Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will cover the contest on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
