
Cedar Rapids Holds off Chiefs in 10 Innings Saturday

Peoria, IL - The Chiefs forced extra innings against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday at Dozer Park, but fell 3-2 in 10 innings.
Ben Ross homered in the extra frame off Edgar Manzo to make it 3-1. Ross drove in all three Kernels runs.
Zane Mills started for Peoria and opened the contest with a pair of walks. After a strikeout, Ross doubled to give Cedar Rapids an early 1-0 edge.
Ross had two of the 11 hits for Cedar Rapids going 2-for-4. Andrew Cossetti led all hitters with three hits, going 3-for-5.
Mills went 3.2 innings allowing one run on five hits, walked two and struck out four.
His counterpart, C.J. Culpepper worked six shutout innings in his High-A debut. The right-hander allowed just three hits with one walk with six punch outs.
Peoria was down to its final out when they broke through to tie the game in the ninth against Mike Paredes. R.J. Yeager and Jimmy Crooks kickstarted the rally with back-to-back one-out singles. After Yeager was thrown out at home when Ramon Mendoza tried a squeeze bunt, Osvaldo Tovalin singled through the right side to bring Crooks home to knot the game at one.
Crooks went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
The Chiefs drew within one in their half of the tenth. Jermey Rivas scored on a Darlin Moquete ground out to make it 3-2. Paredes went on to strike out Alex Iadisernia to end the game.
Cedar Rapids has taken three of the first four games in this series and now a pair in extra innings. The Kernels improve to 45-28 and 5-2 in the second half as the Chiefs are now 37-36 and 4-3 in the latter half.
Game five of the six-game set is scheduled for Sunday at 6:35 P.M.
