DENVER - For the second consecutive season, the Colorado Mammoth has designated defenseman Rich Catton a franchise player, shielding the veteran from unrestricted free agency.

National Lacrosse League teams are permitted to name up to two franchise players, thereby retaining the rights to key veteran players. Only players that are 32 or older and have at least six seasons of NLL experience are eligible for the franchise designation.

Catton, 35, signed with the Mammoth as a free agent prior to the 2006 season and is a major component of the team's defensive corps. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Catton, a sheriff in his home province of British Columbia, has tallied one goal and 14 assists and picked up 131 loose balls while playing in all 32 regular season games for the Mammoth in the last two seasons. He's added three assists and 23 loose balls in four playoff games.

"Rich is a tremendous defensive player and a leader of our team," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "He has played with passion and intelligence and it was an easy decision to once again make him a franchise player."
