
Cats Take Series Finale from Wingnuts

FORT WORTH, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 8-1 to the Fort Worth Cats at LaGrave Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Cats' Right-hander Wade Mackey pitched a complete game two-hitter in his first professional start to earn the win. Mackey walked three and struck out one, and finished the game on 89 pitches.
Fort Worth scored first for the first time in the series, plating two runs in the opening inning. Soft groundballs through the left side from Jeremy Sauceda and Marcos Rodriguez were followed by a bloop single to right by Travis Metcalf that loaded the bases. John Allen drove in a run, hitting into a double play that made it 1-0, and then Trent Lockwood scored Rodriguez with a two-out, infield single to shortstop.
The Wingnuts scratched out a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to center from Jorge Delgado, but the Cats extended their lead with four in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Derek Kinzler reached on an infield single up the middle and moved to second when Cory Morales walked. Cameron Monger broke the game open with a three-run home run to left field to give the Cats a 5-1 lead. Metcalf added a two-out, RBI single later in the frame for the Cats' sixth run.
Trent Lockwood hit a towering, wind-aided home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-1.
Jonathan Ellis was charged with six earned runs in four innings and took the loss in his Wingnuts' debut. Ellis struck out three, walked two, and allowed 12 hits.
David Miller worked a scoreless eighth for the Wingnuts.
Ryan Patterson had a 12-game hitting streak snapped that dated back to last season. Cortes' hit was the 998th of his professional career.
The Wingnuts finish their season-opening road trip 5-2, having each of their first two series.
The Wingnuts now return home for their 2011 home opener versus the El Paso Diablos. Trent Lare is expected to start against Diablos' right-hander Cardoza Tucker.
